A deep crimson — a red with reduced red tones and increased black. An ancient Chinese color name. Besides safflower, the crimson dye can also be made from cochineal insects (Dactylopius coccus). Female cochineals from South America contain carminic acid, used to produce dyes, food colorants, and cosmetics.
