Sepia is the Greek word for cuttlefish. It refers to the brownish-brown pigment made from cuttlefish ink. The dark brown secretion from the ink gland inside the cuttlefish — its ink — dries into a brownish-brown pigment. This pigment is thought to have been used since very ancient times. Though now synthetic, its name as a color is well established.
