Majolica refers to a type of colorful earthenware produced in various parts of Italy since the Middle Ages, coated with an opaque white tin glaze. The technique is said to have reached Italy from Spain via the Mediterranean island of Majorca in the late Middle Ages. The name comes from the Italian "Majolica" (also written maiolica).
