A blackish red-brown. The deep purple-red of lobster shells is called "ebi-iro" (shrimp color); the brownish version is "ebi-cha" (shrimp tea). When producing hakama for schoolgirls in the Meiji period, avoiding noble purple made shrimp tea fashionable. It is also associated with Waseda University's official color. Since "ebi" sounds identical to "grape" in Japanese, the name is also written "葡萄茶" (grape tea), referring to a dark purple-red close to wine color.
