A dark gray like the fur of a mouse — and the name for the entire gray family. During the Edo period, sumptuary laws banned bright dyes, allowing only brown, gray, and dark blue tones. These colors became immensely popular, giving rise to dozens of variations — the so-called "forteight teas and hundred mice" (四十八茶百鼠). Notable examples include Blue Gray, Plum Gray, Silver Gray, Tea Gray, and Rikyū Gray. Pure gray is therefore also called "素鼠" (su-nezumi, "plain mouse").
