"一斤染" (ikkin-zome, "one-pound dye") refers to the pale pink obtained by dyeing one bolt of silk fabric with one kin (approximately 600g) of safflower. One bolt (hiki) equals two tan of silk, with one tan being enough fabric for one adult garment. The color range is broad, from near-cherry-blossom pink to near-orange. This traditional color name dates back to the Heian period. Safflower was extremely expensive; deep shades dyed with safflower were forbidden for commoners, and only the faint ikkin-zome was permitted. Today, ikkin-zome is still used for kimono and Japanese confections.
