Smalt is a bright blue pigment made by grinding cobalt glass into powder. Used since antiquity in Egypt and Mycenae. Cobalt glass is colored blue with cobalt oxide. Besides decoration, it is used for goggles in high-temperature work. As a pigment, smalt was beloved by painters. In Japanese, it is also called "花紺青" (hana-konjō).
