Brick buildings introduced from the West during the Meiji period became symbols of civilization and enlightenment, quickly gaining popularity. Due to low earthquake resistance, they are now mainly decorative. The Japanese color name "煉瓦色" (renga-iro) is relatively new, born after the Meiji period. Though not a traditional Japanese color, it carries a nostalgic, vintage appeal.
